To no one’s surprise, mobile technology ownership in America is on the rise. Many Americans even categorize their mobile devices as something they “can’t live without.” In the business of using text message surveys or communications for professional purposes, it’s extremely important to consider how much of your audience will be accessible through this medium and what types of devices they’ll be using to access your communications.
So just how many people in America own mobile devices and how often do they use them? What types of devices are more popular than others? And exactly how often do Americans access a mobile device throughout their day?
According to Pew Research Center’s Mobile Technology Fact Sheet,
90% of American adults own a cell phone
64% of American adults own a smartphone
32% of American adults own an e-reader
42% of American adults own a tablet computer
Additionally, some U.S. adults depend solely on smartphones for internet access, particularly younger adults, minorities and lower-income Americans. Pew finds that of adults who own smartphones, 7% are “smartphone dependent” for internet access.
American adults are also becoming increasingly more dependent on their mobile phones, with the amount of times users interact with their devices in a day increasing over the years. According to Pew,
“67% of cell owners find themselves checking their phone for messages, alerts, or calls — even when they don’t notice their phone ringing or vibrating.
44% of cell owners have slept with their phone next to their bed because they wanted to make sure they didn’t miss any calls, text messages, or other updates during the night.
29% of cell owners describe their cell phone as ‘something they can’t imagine living without.’”
This steadily increasing and heavily focused dependency Americans have on their mobile devices makes it necessary for businesses to employ methods of interacting with customers through this medium. By tapping into text messaging or other mobile friendly methods of communication, businesses are able to access audiences more effectively and quickly than through email or snail mail.
