For Americans, Thanksgiving celebrations have come to take on a variety of forms. In terms of food, who you spend it with, and where you spend it, everyone’s celebration is unique. Some prefer real cranberry sauce, some prefer canned, and with those preferences come strong opinions about whose choice is the better one. (I prefer canned and, no, I don’t bother to cut it up to appear less canned when served. If there isn’t a red, canned shaped log of jelly on the table then it isn’t Thanksgiving.)
Yahoo Food recently surveyed 1,000 people across America about how they plan to celebrate this year, including how they’ll prepare and what their plans are for Thanksgiving weekend. Some of the results are surprising, especially the number of people planning to serve ham for dinner this year. Here are some of Yahoo’s most interesting findings:
Thanksgiving is America’s 2nd favorite holiday, behind Christmas
82% plan to spend Thanksgiving with family
36% of Millennials say they’ll celebrate a “Friendsgiving”
22% include pets in Thanksgiving celebrations
43% say Turkey is by far their favorite food on the table
18% makes stuffing the second favorite
44% of Millennials will serve ham instead of turkey
44% of Millennials won’t serve cranberry sauce
44% of Amercians will host Thanksgiving dinner
24% of Americans will go to another house for a second meal
72% of Americans plan to attend a Thanksgiving dinner with more than 5 people
47% say they’ll begin planning Thanksgivnig dinner at least a month in advance
54% of people don’t start cooking until the day before Thanksgiving
28% don’t begin cooking until the day of
57% like to sit and talk after Thanksgiving meals
53% like to watch TV with 44% choosing football
